  • Q: How do I turn off the lab machines?
  • A: You should never turn off the lab machines. Simply log out when you're done using them. Remember, the cluster and other people use those machines when you aren't there, so turning them off would ruin it for everyone. -- BobKrzaczek

  • Q: How do I ask questions here?
  • A: Follow the examples you see here. Only supply the question part, someone else will add the answer later. If it doesn't look right to you when you preview this page, check to make certain you've got three spaces at the beginning of the line, an asterisk, another space, and then your question. It's a little silly, I know, but it makes it easy for the system to automatically turn your questions into a list. -- BobKrzaczek

  • Q: I know the answer to someone's question! How do I answer it?
  • A: Just edit this page, and follow the pattern you see established for other questions and answers. It helps if you sign your answers, so we know who to thank (and from where to get more answers). Of course, you don't have to sign them if you really don't want to. -- BobKrzaczek

  • Q: How do I know who has an account and who doesn't?
  • A: There's several ways to do this; here's an easy one. Log onto one of the Center's Sun workstations, and in a terminal window run the finger utility, supplying the "short" option -s and the user's last name all in lower case. If the system can find an account for that last name, it will display it. Otherwise, you'll get a line with ??? in it. For example, if you wanted to see if there was someone in the Center whose last name was "Rhody", you might type finger -s rhody followed by the return key. -- BobKrzaczek

  • Q: How do you reedit from a preview? It only seems to give you the option to save?
  • A: You can use the "Back" button on your browser to return to editing. almost all browsers will retain what you have already typed. -- PatrickStein

  • Q: Do you know of a tool that I can use with WinEdt? (or other LaTeX? environments) to coordinate labels with the thing that is labeled (equations, tables, figures, sections, etc.)? It would be nice to get a (sorted) list of labels and an indication of what they label so that one would not have to remember them. Bonus: if there is a .aux file available, indicate the document reference associated with the label as well. (This is a follow-up on a conversation between Harvey and Bob.)-- HarveyRhody
  • A: There is a CTAN package named "showlabels" that one can use to print the content of the \label commands in the margin of the document. Using this during the editing of a document would create a DVI file showing all the labels. Obviously, this feature should be turned off when publishing the document. -- GabrielDore

  • Q: My ISP (Frontiernet) blocks port 25 for outgoing mail to a non-ISP mail server. I am able to connect to RIT's VPN and a samba share. Is it possible to send mail to mail.cis.rit.edu using VPN from my house? -- ScottKlempner
