We support a number of different packages for rendering text and graphics
into high quality documentation.
You probably should become familiar with at least a few of these systems
in order to complete your labs, reports, and thesis requirements.
Many of the topics below may not be yet available;
as time permits and needs drive, we'll write them up.
If there's something you really need explained,
come see one of the CIS sysadmins.
That way, we'll know that there's a topic that needs to be
written up so everyone will benefit.
- PrintingStuff
- This topic will explain how to print your labs, papers, DVI, PostScript, PDF, and other files.
- UsingLaTeX
- The TeX system is widely recognized as the most powerful formatting system for producing book quality scientific and technical text. Yes, really. LaTeX is a system written "on top" of TeX that makes it much easier to use. LaTeX can be used in the production of anything ranging from a book or a thesis down to a single page homework assignment. The UsingLaTeX topic is intended to produce a brief overview of the functionality, how to get to it here in the Center, and other hints in its use.
- UsingSGML
- The Standard Generalized Markup Language (SGML) is a way of writing structured text in a way that can be easily exchanged with other authors and text processing tools. DocBook is a widely accepted SGML application suited for authoring books and manuals. The UsingSGML topic will provide an overview of the SGML related tools available in CIS, how to access them from your account, and other tips.
- StarOffice?
- Someone ought to write up a bit on how to use the Star Office system from the Suns, using their word processor, and so forth.
