Recent additions, improvements, or other
user-visible
changes to the
CIS computing environment.
Feel free to contact the CIS system administrators for
additional information on anything you find below.
Unless otherwise marked, software installations below reference
the new Solaris package filesystems.
- 2003 Dec 07
- Installed IRAF 2.12.1 and X11IRAF 1.3.1 on the DIP and UDIP lab Sun machines. Tools like cl, xgterm, and friends are available under
/usr/local/bin on those systems. You may want to set a variable in your environment named iraf to /iraf/iraf depending on how you use IRAF; if you don't know what I'm talking about, then you can ignore this.
- 2003 Dec 04
- Installed ghostview and gv for viewing PostScript files. I'm surprised that no one noticed they were missing (ghostscript is, of course, installed). In general, if you don't know which tool to use, use gv.
- 2003 Nov 22
- The following packages have been built "all four ways"; that is, they have been built using both Forte (native) and Gnu (gcc) toolkits, and they have been built using both 32 and 64 bit ABI.
- glib 1.2.10
- gtk+ 1.2.10
- glib 2.2.3
- Installed fortune on a whim.
- I've had it with the [expletive deleted] who maintains netpbm. I'll be deleting the current install and downgrading us to version 9 in order to get some useful documentation.
- 2003 Nov 10
- Deleted all GLib, GTK, Pango, and ATK libraries. The builds are flawed.
- 2003 Sep 30
- Installed the netpbm tools, version 10.11.13. Unfortunately, the maintainer has removed the man pages and instead expects everyone to use his own man program. I've updated its fake manpages to point people at file:///cis/doc/netpbm
- 2003 Sep 12
- Installed the texlooper utility for use by the TeX and LaTeX hackers in the Center. You can get a summary of it with
man texlooper but I hope to write a more general TeX/LaTeX wiki page sometime in the near future.
- 2003 July 9
- Installed the pkg-config tool, version 0.15.0.
- Installed the glib library, version 2.2.2, to both
/cis and /gnu hierarchies.

/cis and /gnu hierarchies.

/cis and /gnu hierarchies.

/cis and /gnu hierarchies.
- 2003 July 8
- Added the wget tool for downloading files from the net for Solaris systems.
- Added gmp, the GNU multiprecision numeric library for working with very large numbers. This is built into both the
/cis and /gnu trees, using the appropriate compilers.
- Added Dan Bernstein's ucspi-tcp tools for TCP network hacking from the command line.
- 2003 July 1
- Added the prosper presentation system to the LaTeX? documentation system.

- Fixed installation of Adobe Acrobat reader to work with Netscape installations.
- 2003 June 3
- Installed dtree directory lister (no big deal, but useful when writing documentation).
- 2003 June 2
- Upgraded condor to latest version, including major changes to how it's installed and accessed by users. See UsingCondor? for details.
- 2003 May 30
- Restructured the sgml library tree at
/cis/common/sgml to better sort all the ISO character entity files and the various DocBook and HTML DTD files.
