Your home directory has a number of "hidden" files in it that control many aspects of how you interact with the CIS systems. These files really aren't hidden, but simply are not shown when you list your files because they start with a leading period, or "dot". Hence, their common name "dot files".

Take care when editing your dot files! If you make a mistake, you could accidentally disable your whole account. You would then need to see a sysadmin in order to gain access to your account.
