Overview

  • Update We were accepted on 2007-May-08. Letter is included below.
  • Abstract submitted: 2007-Feb-26 19:53 EST. This included final changes and comments from Harvey, Joel, and Ralph. Thanks, all!
  • Notification of Acceptance scheduled for 2007-Apr-30
  • Submission Tracking Number OP07-OP401-43

  • Infrared Spaceborne Remote Sensing and Instrumentation XV (OP401) appears on page 20 of the Call For Papers of SPIE Optics and Photonics Optical Engineering and Applications symposium running 26-30 August 2007 in San Diego.
  • The full text of the Call For Papers for this particular interest is available online.
    • This is also where abstracts are submitted for the conference.
    • There are two "interests" of this conference program:
      • instrument and sensor integration challenges and experiences
      • planned and required enabling technologies
    • We need to work these into the forefront of our DCS interest, since the rest of the suggested topics really don't speak to us.
    • I've placed the original invitation to this down at the end of the page for reference.

Title

The SOFIA Data Cycle System, Today and Tomorrow: System Design and User Perspective

Abstract

The Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy (SOFIA) offers a diverse set of facility science instruments (FSI) to its intended audience of general investigators (GI). A wide range of imaging capabilities throughout the infrared spectrum is made available to those users, without requiring special knowledge, training, or even travel to the observatory's mission operations center. Supporting this goal is a challenge, as the FSI are developed by different institution with different science requirements and using different technologies. The solution, called the Data Cycle System (DCS), is designed and implemented as an end-to-end system facilitating the GI use of the observatory, including support from proposal submission and observation planning, through the execution and automated pipelined data reduction of observations, to the archival and distribution of data products. Thus far, the DCS has successfully integrated with two FSIs: FLITECAM, a near-IR camera developed by I. McLean at UCLA, and FORCAST, a mid-IR camera developed by T. Herter at Cornell. The far-IR instruments HAWC, developed by D. A. Harper at the University of Chicago, and FIFI-LS, developed by A. Poglitsch at the Max Planck Institute for Extraterrestrial Physics, will next be integrated with the DCS in the near future. The DCS provides the common infrastructure supporting the use of these FSI within the observatory, and also provides an effective re-use of technology assisting the development of future science instruments. and eases the development of future science instruments. We present and discuss this infrastructure, and some of its ongoing and future improvements, as it facilitates the development of the next generation of SOFIA instruments, and optimizes their potential science output.

The Original Invitation

We are writing to apprise you of an opportunity for instrument developers and technologists to submit papers on concepts for SOFIA science instruments for the August 28-30, 2007 SPIE meeting "Optics & Photonics 2007" and its conference on "Infrared Spaceborne Remote Sensing and Instrumentation XV (OP401)". Appropriate concepts include potential next-generation science instruments, enabling instrument technologies, or upgrades to the first-generation science instruments (see http://www.sofia.usra.edu/Science/instruments/sci_instruments.html) currently under development. Papers should include a description of the unique science they will enable on SOFIA. The intent of this session is to stimulate a dialog with the community on the best scientific use of SOFIA beyond the science enabled by its first generation instruments. The SOFIA-related contributions will be collected in a special section of the conference and its proceedings.

Abstracts are due on February 26, 2007 to the SPIE meeting web site at: http://spie.org/Conferences/Calls/07/op/oea/index.cfm?fuseaction=OP401

For any questions related to the SOFIA instrumentation program, please contact Sean Casey (scasey@mail.sofia.usra.edu).

  • Manuscript Specifications and Manuscript Submission

On behalf of the chairs for the conference on "Infrared Spaceborne Remote Sensing and Instrumentation XV" it is my pleasure to confirm the acceptance of your submission, "The SOFIA data cycle system, today and tomorrow: system design and user perspective." This conference is part of the SPIE Symposium on Optical Engineering + Applications which will be held 26-30 August 2007 at the San Diego Convention Center in San Diego, CA .

PRESENTATION DETAILS

Paper Number: 6678-47
Please refer to this SPIE Paper Number in all correspondence about the presentation or submission of this manuscript.

Presentation Type: oral
The decision of oral or poster presentation is made by the conference chair(s). If you are scheduled to present a poster, please confirm by 11 June that you or a coauthor will attend the meeting to present the poster so that we can reserve a poster board for you.

Full-length manuscripts are required for all accepted oral and poster presentations, including invited and keynote presentations. Manuscript specifications are included below.

Presentation Date: 30 Aug 2007

IMPORTANT DATES

Today
If you need a visa, begin the visa application process now! Please apply for your visa as soon as possible and no later than 3 months before the meeting. Stricter security requirements are delaying visa approvals. Please be ready to provide your resume (in English), a list of publications, and your travel itinerary at your visa interview. Information about visas is available at http://national-academies.org/visas

If you require an invitation letter in order to receive a visa, or if you need a letter to confirm your presentation acceptance for funding purposes for your institution, please complete the form found at http://SPIE.org/InvitationLetterPDF and return it to SPIE, 1-360-647-1445.

14 May
The technical program is now available at SPIE.org/events/op and will also be mailed to you. The program will include a complete list of technical presentations and special events (based on commitments received up to the time of publication), travel information, a hotel accommodation form, and a registration form.

11 June
If you or a co-author are unable to make your presentation please notify me no later than 12 June so we can remove the presentation from the final program. If you are a scheduled for a poster presentation, please reserve your board by this date. If you do not contact me by this date and you do not give your presentation at the meeting, this will be noted in your permanent record with SPIE and you risk not being accepted to present at future SPIE events.
