A visit to Ontario Beach Park for collecting temperatures (data for the day) - Make sure your leg doesn't fall asleep!!!;-)
First step was acquaiting myself with the GPS systems - ETREX & GARMIN (of which ETREX died on us most unexpectedly!)
Points taken off the GPS give us the physical location on land in terms of Longitute and Latitude - exact Geographical location
A transducer (thermostat) hooked onto a make shift float of fat thermocol square was lowered till the surface of the water
the transducer readings are measured in volts on a DVM (the DVM is set to 20K for the readings because its the calibration specific for the transducers operation)
Data sheet consisted of 4 entries : GPS Waypoint (# indicated on the GPS eg.078); Time (indicated on the GPS when Waypoint is read in); Physical location (indicate the places along the lenght of the Pier where the readings were taken) and DVM reading
The voltages are then converted to temperatures in degrees Celsius and Fahrenheit using the conversion table available to get an initial estimate
Make a note of the weather conditions on the data sheet i.e presence or absence of cloud, wind, water sillness, haze over the city
